Windows/Mac/Linux: Firefox 4 Beta 7 is out, and it's an impressive preview of the final release. Mozilla has let loose the JaegerMonkey engine, enabled hardware graphics acceleration on Windows and Mac, and integrated Sync and the awesome Panoramal "Tab Candy".

Mozilla says their JaegerMonkey compiler, combined with their other improvements, leaves Firefox 4 with a seriously impressive engine for rendering web pages and interpreting webapps and games. Their chart of three benchmark tests, including their own, shows what looks like some serious improvements, at least over their previous releases.

(Auto resize: show original)

In a demonstration video, Team Firefox makes the case more clear for how JavaScript performance can speed along tomorrow's webapps:

In addition to the raw code and horsepower additions, Mozilla also notes the inclusion of hardware-based graphics acceleration in this beta, along with more obvious integration of previous experiments like Sync, Pannorama, and App Tabs.

Firefox 4 Beta 7 is a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Download it, give it a spin, and tell us what you think of the new browser and its liquored-up simian core.

Intel 1,000 cores inside

A look into the future of Intel processor’s technology took place at the Supercomputer 2010 conference last week. Some really interesting thoughts and remarkable ideas were stated by Mr.Timothy Mattson – Intel researcher. Dropping out the details, the basic idea is that the SCC (Single Chip Cloud) processor is feasible to support up to 1,000 cores inside. Only after this tremendous number of cores, the SCC technology will reach the peak of its potential. So, what comes next is they will just keep adding cores until reach the limit of today’s SCC technology.

Some problems though are quite concerning about this massive core-addictive chips, such as scalability and cache coherency. This means that each core should have the same perspective view of the system as everyone else, thus the protocol’s communication becomes very complex to handle with.

Is Black Ops about to offer online subscriptions?

Although Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter previously shared in a research note some of his thoughts on Activision's possible plan to monetize online gaming, today he provided IndustryGamers further detail on the structure of such a plan. It should be noted that Activision hasn't officially ever said that they will start a subscription plan, although Bobby Kotick has certainly hinted at it.

We asked Pachter if Activision would have lost out on sales and not broken the entertainment sales record if they had announced a subscription to coincide with Call of Duty: Black Ops. Pachter acknowledged that Activision probably would have been hurt by such a plan initially: "Activision apparently worried that announcing multiplayer subscriptions before the launch of Black Ops would hurt sales. It's likely that around 60 - 70% of the people who buy Black Ops do so to play online multiplayer, and a greater number of the first week purchasers. Even if Activision retained fully free online multiplayer, the mere mention of a 'premium' subscription service will tick off some consumers, and there might have been a backlash at the precise time that they needed to set records. They decided not to take that risk."

While Pachter admits he has no insider info on a subscription plan and he could be wrong, he ultimately sees it happening in a tiered format, with the highest tier offering players online gaming access to all Activision titles, including the new Bungie game, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and more.

Retail threatens to ban Steam

Steam, The world's biggest digital distribution platform for games is under attack as MCV reports, they understand that key retailers will drop titles that integrate the popular Steam service as fears mount that the service has a ‘monopoly’ on the download market.

Insiders say Steam, run by US studio Valve, serves a massive 80 per cent of the PC download sector. And retailers preparing their own rival platforms don’t want that share to grow any more.

Some of the biggest PC games – such as Call of Duty and Fallout – use Steam. But retailers are concerned that selling games with the tech built-in pushes users towards only buying games via Valve going forward.

At least two major retailers will demand that publishers remove Steam from their games – or they will not sell them in any form.

“If we have a digital service, then I don’t want to start selling a rival in-store,” said the digital boss at one of the biggest UK games retailers.

“Publishers are creating a monster – we are telling suppliers to stop using Steam in their games.”

The head of sales at a big-name digital service provider agreed: “At the moment the big digital distributors need to stock games with Steam. But the power resides with bricks and mortar retailers, they can refuse to stock these titles. Publishers are hesitant, but retail must put pressure on them.”

Gaikai CEO David Perry told MCV Steam could become the games-equivilent of iTunes, where it dictates the terms of the market, not the other way around: “Steam has made it so easy for everyone and they have lots of users. But how long do you wait before you take control of your own digital strategy? Like with iTunes, at some point it’s going to be too late.”
